Misc. Photos

So I was able to finally get my act together, (yes I feel SO much better thanks) and have been able to upload some recent photos.
The girls had a new friend over several weeks ago, and they put on a play...I can't actually remember much about the story line (it was fuzzy at the time as well) but thumbs up for imaginative play!

We took a fall favorite drive. Somehow it turned into a 5 hour drive (generally 3.5) and we all just wanted to get home at the end. We crossed the continental divide where it was snowing of course. While the ride was beautiful, as we came back into our town, we realized that we needn't have strayed so far from home - it was just as beautiful here! We probably will make that drive again, in say...10-20 years..maybe?

We finally end up with some pics from conference. We were happy that our daughter wanted to attend - it was great to have her there with us. She behaved so well and took notes - it was a really neat experience to share with her.

Lack of disclosure

I have to apologize for not posting more often - I know...it's been strangely silent.
Anyways - we had the chance to visit family last weekend. Somehow, I got food poisoning, which continued on and on and on (until yesterday.) Finally, after my brother scared the bejeebees out of me, I went to the doctor and was diagnosed. It would appear that I have a kidney infection. All I can say is hooray for drugs (and for my brother for making me go to the doctor)! My stomach has not gurgled audibly today, and everything I ate stayed down - what a relief. I will blog, I will. I left the house today for the first time in several long days - and had two rehearsals. I think I'm worn out.

Can'o'ramma and tender mercies

It seems like forever since I last blogged. Pretty crazy how busy we get! The first part of last week was spent canning peaches and tomatoes at my friends home...we did 90 jars altogether and she earned the title - queen of domesticity. I also stole this picture off of her blog since I forgot to take any pictures. Thanks ..Onto the apples this week!

We spent some time out of town last week. We traveled out for my great uncles' funeral, my brother's homecoming from his mission, and for a church conference. It was really great to visit with relatives that I rarely see, and to spend time with our families. Unfortunately, I got some killer bu on Friday. After a blessing Friday night, I was much better on Saturday, attended the first session of conference, and then watched the second with my husband's parents. However, Sunday morning I woke up sick again. We packed up and headed home - none too early.
I learned this weekend that Heavenly Father does really love me, and He hears and answers my prayers. I consider it a tender mercy that I was able to recuperate on Saturday to feel great and be able to attend conference with my husband and daughter. Sunday morning while in prayer I asked Heavenly Father to bestow a special blessing upon me so that I could get home without any problems. I was uncomfortable for 4 hours, but okay. We got to a rest stop that I really needed then. The last two hours were really tough, and the rest of the evening was amazingly tough. I was so grateful that we made it home with me in one piece - I didn't care if I was sick all night at home (was) as long as I was able to get home. I know my prayers were answered and that blessings work and that my Heavenly Father knows me and hears and answers my prayers.

In my pretty Garden

This year has been a really crazy one (seasonally that is.) Yes, here we go again, I am going to talk about the weather.

Our spring was VERY cold and snowy (through mid June +) and everything seemed to be behind by 2-4 weeks. We started our garden indoors back in March, and put it into the ground within water walls on May 4th. We didn't plant our other stuff until June 15th (rule of thumb here since it ALWAYS does a good hard frost around the 14th.) However, it was a pretty darn cool summer. I dare you to try and find anywhere in this blog where I complain about it being too hot. Nobody wanted to sign up for swimming lessons until the end of the summer because it seemed like torture to make our kids get wet in such cool weather.

Well, July came around and warmed up, but the monsoon season came as well, and it rained every afternoon. We started getting colder again in August (even had some snow nearby)...and well... we had hoped for a better summer.

WE also started out very gung ho, but I definitely petered out. After prepping and weeding and working so hard, I just got tired and wasn't motivated this year like I have been in the past. Our pumpkins and watermelon plants completely died. The seeds for squash and cucumbers and basil and peppers never came up... it was fairly disappointing. We got a few (3) zucchinis (not plants, actual guys we could eat.) So - it was disheartening.
However, we got some great carrots, and some of our tomatoes did well - some not so well - I guess that's how it goes. We planted a variety called 4th of July - guess when they were supposed to be bearing? Well, they just started. Unfortunately, most of them only get to be the size of a golf ball. We're going for all beefsteak next year.

We had a couple of heavy/hard frosts earlier this week and when we looked, we could see that most of our plants were completely fried. So, we rushed to bring in all of our tomatoes. We started later in the evening and ended up working in the dark!
However, I think we got most of them. We have boxes of green tomatoes in the basement just waiting to green up and be canned while we wait for some parts for our stove. Last year due to our excessive canning, all of the wiring under my burners melded together... I'm getting some different burners too hopefully this week so that this doesn't happen again.

Here are some photos from this past week. My husband playing with the kids (and a neighbor) after FHE,

the girls playing with one of our zucchinis and our daughter holding a friend's baby.

Sweet acts of Charity, and I've been tagged

I have to say that my girls are pretty awesome. This morning went more smoothly than some (this means everyone was wearing clean clothes, got breakfast and actually got their hair fixed and prayers said before they ran out the door.) Anyways - with 8 minutes to spare (miracle - negative 2 is our norm) they trekked to school. My youngest had her backpack full of Gogurts which she got to take today for her turn at the snack. Her pack was so heavy for her along with her library books and lunch. As I spied out the window (as I do every morning) I watched them run across the street holding hands (cause the older was watching out for the younger - not always so common) and then, I saw them pause and then stop. My oldest took her backpack off, and she took her sister's and put it on herself so that she could help her sister with the weight. It seems to be rare that I see such acts of selflessness and I treasure seeing it this morning. I've got some great girls and am so grateful for them!

Finally, onto another matter - my sister tagged me...wanting me to share some of my ubiquitous quirks. Unfortunately - I am not aware that I have any of those, and so thus, I have been stalling. Truly, in 4 days I haven't been able to think of a one.
Therefore, my dear reader - if you would like to participate in this tagging - please feel free - you are invited to comment and if YOU can POSSIBLY find anything to comment on (regarding a quirk that I MAY or MAY NOT have, please feel free to share.) I thank you beforehand, my loyal reader for your participation - I'm supposed to come up with 6 - fire away! If you aren't able to come up with any - that's okay too - I understand! :)

Worse than a bath

It really isn't very often that one of my kids say something that I gut laugh about, but it happened yesterday. My oldest child prefers to not bathe (I hope it is a stage). We have a standing rule that she MUST bathe/shower at least for Sunday, and we try to negotiate at least two other weekly showers in as well - but aren't always as successful as we'd like.
She LOVES to play in the mud in the back yard - in fact if I can't find her, there's a 99.9% chance that that's where she will be. Digging holes and making mud and actually, I'm not sure what she does with it other than wear it. I love for my kids to have imaginative play - last year they built the Nile and some pyramids. Anyways, she wears it on her face, her hair, arms, and legs and everywhere else. I'm actually ALL for it - but struggle with the whole not wanting to bathe afterwards part.
(I've used this picture in a previous post, but it clearly illustrates her penchant for mud - although she's generally dirtier than the other kids in this photo.)

SO - yesterday she took off to the neighbor's (to weave some hot pads) as soon as she got home from school. I brought her home so that she could work on her homework first. This is what I heard:
"I hate homework. It is the worst thing ever invented. I hate it more than anything." She didn't really get much of a response from me as she loves to rant and I have become rather desensitized over the years. Then as I walked out to the garage to grab something I heard, "This is worse than taking a bath!"
It was a really good thing I was out in the garage, because I couldn't stop laughing. It explains everything - so par for the course for her...
What do you know that is worse for your kids than a bath?

On a side note, after getting that out of her system, she buckled down, did the homework and ran off to play, quickly forgetting her intense pain.

A family addition, and the ganache...

Not only lizards, but we've now taken to adopting people!
Yesterday was our friend's birthday - he's somehow been adopted into the family - it's true - we aren't sure if he should receive condolences or congratulations!
As such, we had a family dinner for his birthday.
Here he is with an inside out german chocolate cake... which yes, is covered in a ganache. Needless to say, get a couple of guys around a gourmet cake and throw out a word like ganache and suddenly all of the jokes are on you. I've never heard the word ganache used in so many different contexts!
Thanks guys...
Happy Birthday - we wish you many many more, and welcome to the family!

Family Survivor Series

Ever tried to dry pack can 1,500 lbs of food with two little girls? I believe they should make it into one of those reality t.v. shows - like survivor.

Here's our front room before we started...

One of our kids decided that she could heft the 25 and 50 lb bags to pour the contents into the #10 cans…. She really didn’t believe us that it was a difficult job. I was very relieved when she decided to go help her dad push the button and keep the machine on the counter - she turned out to be a great help to him in that position and I love to see how patient he is with her!

Our other daughter was our great organizer. She put stickers on all of the cans and got them organized to take downstairs, and kept me supplied with clean cans, helping get oxy packs and lids on everything.

It always seems that once we get the production line finally into place things go well – it only took 3 hours, and the girls helped for 2 – and they were a great help!
We did get a can of wheat which was contaminated by some blood, and at least one can of oats spilled all over the floor -

BUT we survived, and are thrilled to be finished with that project!!

Places I've visited

I saw this on my cousins blog and thought it was pretty cool and that I'd have to copy it. Up next - I think I need to tackle Europe!
You can't see it, but I have been to one very small S. American Country (island).. so I've covered all of the americas...

visited 6 states (2.66%)

I've almost got all of the US... I'm excited that Hawaii is on the list of need to visit still!

visited 42 states (84%)

An addition to our family!!

We’ve had an addition to the family – I can’t believe I haven’t introduced our new arrival yet! Two weeks ago, I was sweeping the kitchen floor and the cat brought me in a present. (She does that from time to time and they are usually live – and then all …. Well, you get the picture.)

This time, it wasn’t a bird and it wasn’t a mouse. She outdid herself this time – she caught a lizard! Yep, right from our backyard. I picked it up and showed the girls –they were in awe. I let them carry it outside to put back into it’s habitat. Next thing I know, it is on the trampoline with a group of kids and then on my table in a box with some food and water!!

Well – a friend lent us all of her snake get up, and we named her Lizzie. We even drove down and got her food and mulch and all sorts of stuff.
Unfortunately, Lizzie wasn’t alive the next morning. Two crying little girls and their daddy ceremoniously buried her.

Did you know that 80% of the reptiles within the US carry salmonella? Ironically, I got rather sick that day as did my little one… it lasted about 3-4 days. A bit suspicious I think~

Well, we figured that since we had the get up, we’d go get another one. So we drove another 30 miles to the pet store to find a cheap lizard… well…let’s just say it hasn’t been cheap. And now we also have a box full of pet crickets..what did we get ourselves into?

Here’s our new lizard. He’s a leopard gecko – we are still working on his name. He may remain nameless as some have voted for Brown, and others for Bandaid. I liked Lenny.

Mother's remorse

Ever heard of buyers remorse? I've got it - but I didn't buy anything.
That day that I've been anticipating for several years has finally arrived.
It is true - I can now officially go to the bathroom on my own (without company), go for a hike or walk without having to push or pull someone, and even go to the grocery store without having to deal with a tantrum, whining, or begging. I have several hours a day to work on my business accounts, play my music, read my scriptures, sew, work on projects, and organize my home. There's no one right behind me messing it all up as I go.

That said - I've found that it just isn't what it is cracked up to be. I miss my little ones - I miss hearing their laughter...I've grown accustomed to go throughout my day with one ear cocked and listening for them - keeping tabs on them..where they are and what they are doing. My house is awfully quiet now. I especially miss my little one - she was my helper.
School has begun. After school yesterday I asked on of my children if she missed me. She replied, "Only a little."
I think I just hit that stage where parents are completely expendable. I never thought that all of my kids would be in school this early - this definitely wasn't what I had planned... I still imagined having 2 or 3 still running around, I figured this day would hit in another 5-10 years or so - not so soon! But here I am and I'm not sure I love it. I wish I could go back and do just a few more art projects, playing with clay, day trips, stories and snugly naps together. I was so excited and now I'm not sure I can figure out what for??

That said - here are our photos of the first day. We had an orientation on Wednesday that turned into - drop your child off for 3 hours and then pick them up at the end of the day... so she had two official first days!

The official first (second) day as (of course) they were late and running out the door:

Once we got there:

After school:

Labor Day 2008

I had to quickly post this picture – because I forgot about it until I was taking some photos off of my camera this morning.
On Labor Day we went to a nearby state park to barbecue and spend some time with some friends. Unfortunately, not everyone paid the day use fee as they came in because they didn’t see it as they were trying to figure out where everyone was. Unfortunately, the park ranger was dealing with ‘l.m. syndrome,’ and felt like he had to be nasty about it. Here he is giving our friends a ticket and telling them that he was ‘being as nice as he possibly could be.’

How many have your name?

By the way - I think it might be me (or my husband's aunt which I'm okay with cause I know her!)

Congratulations!

A big hand goes out to my sister in laws mother... apparently she (or someone where she works) was checking out my blog and they were the 1,000th visitor to my blog since I started counting. Thanks for your visit... that's awesome! I'll try to think of a really great prize...like an expense paid visit to my house!!! :)
We hope you had a great time on your ride this last weekend..it was great to see you all again!

I am not a Monkey...OR an ape!!

I have a MAJOR gripe. I just don't get it - well... actually some other people just don't get it.
We spent some time at the local museum of Natural science...
I had a really hard time going through there with my kids subjecting them to stupidity.
So... the Bible tell us that the earth, plants, animals, water, man & woman EVERYTHING was created by God, or Heavenly Father.
As we walked into the museum we were immediately subjected to the "Big Bang Theory." I'm sure the other parents really appreciated me telling my children that this is definitely not what the Bible tells us. (I don't believe the word "Bang" is even used within that text.)
So...we continued on our merry way...and once again, I was subjected to SEVERAL displays which truly show us how we all evolved from APES. I even took a picture so that people don't believe I'm just spouting off and complaining about nothing.

Ahhhh... the family tree..

Geneology anyone?

I really don't think that this is what genealogists had in mind...

JUST FOR THE RECORD...I MOST EMPHATICALLY DID NOT COME FROM A MONKEY... NO WAY, NO HOW, (no matter what my brother says.)

I Looked out my window and what did I see?

Unfortunately, it wasn't popcorn, and it wasn't a new car. Along those same lines, it wasn't a bear, and it wasn't a coon, elk, or deer -
We HAVE SKUNKS! (And he wasn't skanking for any MDA people out there)

Yes, we've had raccoons, and we've had deer and elk. We now officially get to add skunks to the list and try to figure out how to get rid of them. We've seen several (and smelled them) all summer long, but never imagined that they would be under our porches. Yes folks, that is plural - front and back. Tonight we watched one saunter all over the back porch looking for treats, and listened to, saw and smelled a skunk fight under the front porch. The loser then left. My photos didn't turn out very well through the glass door, so I found one that looked exactly like our little guy. By the way from a distance - he was very cute.

More summer fun

So, several ladies in my area get together once a month in a recipe club. Everyone submits their recipes, and then they bring their creation for everyone to sample. This month's theme was appetizers. My little one was a great help to me this month. She cut off all of my crusts, and flattened all of my bread. Here's the recipe I submitted courtesy of Taste of Home:

Asparagus Appetizer Roll-ups
Serves 6
• 12 slices white bread, crusts removed
• 1 container (8 ounces) spreadable cream cheese
• 2 tablespoons chopped green onions
• 8 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled
• 24 fresh asparagus spears, trimmed
• 1/4 cup butter, melted
• 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
(I added a little bit of ranch dressing mix to the cream cheese mixture to make it extra tasty)
DIRECTIONS
Flatten bread with a rolling pin. In a small bowl, combine the cream cheese, onions and bacon. Spread mixture over bread slices. Cut asparagus to fit bread; place two spears on each bread slice. Roll up bread and place, seam side down, on a greased baking sheet. Brush with butter; sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
Bake at 400° for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Serve immediately. Yield: 1 dozen.

So - of course, we've been doing swimming lessons for the past month. I am happy to say that both of my children advanced in their levels. One would be able to save herself if she needed to, the other still has some work to do, but at least the girls have gotten some pool time this summer!

We spent the other day (once again) in one of my villages. We went to lunch first and then in the village we listened to my friend play banjo.

Someone sang and yodeled to us with his accordion, and really big alps horn...I have no idea what it was called!

We played at the children's museum and then (as always) in the golden river!

Shingles

I wish I could come up with something much more interesting, but here it is.
I am now hydrated and recovered from youth conference (I think). I have a new calling as the primary chorister, and am dog sitting a dog that loves me (I wouldn't say the relationship is totally mutual) in a house that is being left unlocked for 5 days.. If you don't hear from me for a while, the burglar must have gotten me!
Yes - I lead an extremely exciting life. Onto the shingles.
On Sunday a friend came over and needed some help from my husband - our friends' wife has the shingles.. they took her to the hospital in an ambulance it was so bad...My husband said she was REALLY bad when he saw her - he couldn't believe it.
So I went over to visit tonight. After I kissed her cheek as she received me into her home, we chatted. During the conversation, she told me that she was contagious...
Now I itch and am sure that my skin is raising..
I must be mental. I'm going to go wash my face..

The Trek

We are back from an amazing experience. What a blessing it is to take time out of life for spiritual rest and remembrance. Three years ago, we went on the same trek, to the same place, even with some of the same youth. For some reason however, this trek was SO different. I'm sure the difference was me - but it is something that has become very special to me.

We left our girls with some friends in our ward - thanks SO MUCH!! We are blessed to have them as friends that we feel comfortable leaving the girls with. We had dinner with them on Sunday night and then left the girls there. We got up VERY early on Monday morning and met everyone at 6:00 am at the church. Drove to another pick up
spot and approximately later arrived at our destination - Martin's Cove in Wyoming.
There, we were divided into families and the fun began. At first we were pretty apprehensive. Our 8 'kids' didn't appear to like each other, get along, or want to even be near each other. I think our thoughts were along the lines of - oh brother - what have we gotten ourselves into? Three days of this might be pretty tough. However, we packed all of our belongings onto the handcart.

We had a brief orientation, where inside one of the cabins I was able to locate some of my ancestors. I learned that my ancestor WS was 33 years old when he traveled through Martin's Cove in 1856. Approximately one week prior to his arrival there, he had buried his 2 year old son after crossing the North Platte River (now near Casper) and then while there in the cove, he buried his wife R who was 31, and a newborn baby boy who was premature.

Well, we as we traveled, our stuff constantly fell off of the cart- it was ALMOST humorous. We arrived and figured out our tent situations and got our camp set up. Had dinner, watched the kids do some square dancing, had a devotional, and then we had a family home evening around the campfire. We asked our kids to share a pioneer story, or a favorite scripture story. I was grateful as they began to open up and share some of themselves with everyone. We had a beautiful sunset, and the stars were gorgeous.

As we went to bed, the wind picked up - it was CRAZY. Sometime after 1:00 it died down and we were all finally able to get to sleep.
The next morning we hitched up our handcarts and traveled to the Veil Bridge which connects the present with the past. The original land owner requested that his posterity never allow a plow to touch the ground there, and so the landscape is the same as it was back in the 1850's. We had a devotional in Dan's Cove, and then spent time in Martin's Cove. When President Hinckley dedicated the Cove in 1997, he stated that the spirits of those who gave their lives there were there. Although Wyoming doesn't have a temple, this land was dedicated as a temple and hallowed ground - made hallowed by the sacrifices. While in the Cove, I had some very distinctive experiences, and I think I took care of 6 months worth of crying(and for the record - I really don't cry.) It was a very special experience for both myself and my husband.

Later, we had the opportunity to cross the Sweetwater river. The young men were given the opportunity to carry people across the river if they so desired - which I believe was a very special experience for many of the, and then the men were called away to the Mormon Battalion. The women had a short devotional with a very interesting topic. It was pointed out that most women at some time in their lives will have to pull their carts on their own. Whether through lack of finding a worthy mate, divorce, or death the likelihood is great. They talked about the similarity of the YW values as pioneer values, and then - the Young Women were asked to pull their carts on their own. The men lined the path, took of their hats and silently watched as these strong young women carried all of their belongings as well as a 'sick' person up the steepest and sandiest hill. My young sisters told me it was the hardest thing they had ever done in their lives.

Most were hot and tired when we got back to camp. My daughters and I slipped away to quickly shampoo our hair, and then we were informed about a last minute change of plans which allowed us to go (girls first, then boys) play in the river for 30 minutes to cool down. That was a blast!

We then had dinner, more square dancing, a fireside, then a bonfire testimony meeting. That night after the kid's chatting died down, the wind picked back up - it was another tough sleep night.

In the morning, we broke down our camp, and reloaded our cart. One of our daughters had a great idea on how to do it, but the stuff STILL seemed to fall off - just not as often as previously. We started talking about movies and everyone finally started to really laugh, bond, and have lots of fun together. We got back to the pick up area a little bit early, and had some extra time, so 4 of the youth in our family and we decided to go an extra couple of miles and visit Devil's Gate. What a BEAUTIFUL area - probably the most pretty of it all - definitely worth the extra mileage! Afterwards, we loaded up and headed home.

I'm so grateful for the wonderful experience we had. We really were able to connect with several of our 'children' and it was truly and amazing experience.
Although - the shower and clean bed were REALLY nice last night too! I must be getting older, cause I really like my own bed A LOT!

Happy Birthday!

Today we celebrated my sweetie's birthday - once again he is as old as me, so now he can't tease me about how old I am!
We had a little party tonight - we got back from youth conference and went to pick up the girls at a friend's house. She had (oh so graciously) made us some dinner, decorated, helped the girls buy some gifts, and picked up the cake and ice cream for us! So - we had a little party - the whole youth conference thing sort of threw us off, but we love him!

Every night at dinner, he says to the girls, "well, the reason why we've called you here together...is to tell jokes!" Unfortunately, the jokes aren't always quite as funny to the rest of us as they are to him. As such, our youngest daughter gave him some Laffy Taffy for his birthday - I'm sure hoping to help him!

Our other daughter got him a great pig toss game - which I'm sure she is very excited about, since I got that game when I was her age and LOVED playing it at Bear Lake with my little brother all summer (remember that?)

I think his favorite present was his shower, shave, picking up the girls, and a clean bed in his own house!

Getting ready

So, some of you may know that I've been talking about square dancing lately. No - it really isn't because we've suddenly taken it up - well...kind of, but not really by choice. Next week, we are going to Youth Conference and will be spending several days pulling and pushing a handcart across the wind swept plains of Wyoming.

We were asked to teach our youth how to square dance prior to going - so we became overnight officianados..except we still don't know what "allemande" means. I made some beautiful bloomers this morning and will now begin with a nice bonnet, apron and skirt...
We did this trek about 3 years ago, so it will be interesting to see the differences between the two. My grandmother gave me some information on one of my ancestors. As he crossed the North Platte river, his 4 year old son died. Shortly thereafter, in Martin's cove, his wife and premature son also died. The ground was so cold, they struggled to dig graves for the burial so that the wolves wouldn't get the bodies. This man almost literally gave everything he had to follow the prophet and the brethren. Interesting how difficult it is for us today to do the same thing. Something to think about while I "push and pull and go merrily on my way to the valley-o!"
